TEACHING KIDS ABOUT GOD: HOW TO TEACH CHILDREN ABOUT GOD
Teaching kids about God The wonderful thing about kids is that they are inquisitive – not with the intention of attacking, proving someone wrong, or defending something. Kids ask questions, pressing and clever ones at that, to understand more. They seek understanding and their probing questions, if analysed carefully, could assist us in getting a higher understanding of the word of God. How to teach kids about GodSunday school is just as wonderful and educative as the Sunday school teacher. Do not leave everything to the Sunday school teacher; just as you don’t leave all the school work to the class teacher. Kids learn best through stories. Tell them good, educative Biblical stories that you learnt as a kid; explain to them how you interpreted/understood them, also how they impacted on your life – how they had a bearing at who you became. Kids learn best through pictures. Buy them “Kids Bibles” and “The Bible in pictures” or “Interesting Bible story books”. Don’t forget Bible-based DVDs for kids. Every conversation is a chance to teach your child about the Love of God, and about good moral behaviour. Most of the questions they ask could be answered with a lesson – an interesting lesson. Most importantly, kids also learn best from our own actions. Sooner or later, your children would stop listening to you and start imitating you. I have never forgotten the day my mother called a soaking wet little boy from the rain, and noticing that his school uniforms weren’t just wet, but were terribly torn, were, gave him my a set of my brother’s own school clothes to KEEP. The memories will never escape me, of my mom giving selflessly to the needy people in our neighbourhood, despite not being rich herself. For me, such acts of kindness were lessons in motion, and some of the best Biblical lessons I have ever been taught.
Another story I was busy hanging laundry to dry one day, when my son, then 5, out of the blue said to me: “mom, when you and dad are old and my little brother and I no longer live with you, we are gonna be visiting you guys quite often and buy you groceries because you also visit your parents often and we see you buying them stuff.” I was lost for words, and he continued: “it is not right when people leave their elderly parents to fend for themselves, owning perhaps one torn t-shirt and one set of underpants.” Indeed, “Kids learn what they live” TEACH THE BIBLE AND CHANGE LIVES: INVESTING IN THE CHILDREN"Jesus: The Man And His Work."
