The whole world commemorates 'World Aids Day' today. Aids is a disease that does not need any introduction - not anymore,yet what seems like lack of awareness of the disease is sweeping mankind away. Most of us, at the very least, know somebody who knows somebody that has been affected by aids, in one way or another. We cannot plead ignorance or lack of knowledge anymore. Neither can we plead lack of resources to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the devastating effects of aids. What then is the problem? How then should the message be carried accross? Why are we still getting so many infections on a daily basis? Are we so stupid as human beings that we fail to recognise the deadly challenge facing us? We have been awarded the intelligence to control and rule the world; the wisdom to learn from other people's mistakes so that we do not have to fall prey to the same deadly mistakes, yet we still get infected through careless ways. We already have had a lot of HIV infections; and a lot of deaths due to Aids. But how many times have you heard of couples cheating on each other? Ok, you may argue that they may be using protection, and then shift my concern to being a moral one as opposed to a health one. But here I come again. How many times have you heard of a married man having fathered an 'illegitimate' child with his mistress? I know it happens with women too but for this purpose we'll use the male as an example. Those that cheat do not always use protection. Are we so naive as human beings that we have to go all out and sell our lives and those of our families for a mere few moments of 'the illusion of pleasure'? How many teenagers fall pregnant today? Don't our kids know that it is wise to abstain from sex? How many people still diagnose people with their eyes? How many people still view clean clothes and a clear face as a clean bill of health? How long do we need to be educated? Time is not on our side. In some areas, witchcraft is still blamed for aids-related deaths. It is unbelievable! Why are we so in denial about aids? I find it incredible that people can still make statements like "I don't use condoms because the GUYS I go out with do not prefer it. I also don't like it." It's a shame. It is a serious shame. Good people, I challenge you to educate an ignorant person about aids today. It could be a married man trying to hit on you or a teenager talking stupidly about boys/girls and relationships. Educate some stupid fool today. Bring aids into the discussion and make it appear real to that ignorant person and then pray that whatever you taught them has indeed gone upstairs. We have a long way to go; the statistics are overwhelming, but we have to make some difference, nomatter how insignificant it may seem. ............................................ ............................................
